Noise is an invisible hazard on many construction and industrial sites, but its effects can be permanent. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) develops over time due to continuous exposure to loud machinery, tools, and equipment (ILO, 2023). Unlike many workplace injuries, hearing damage cannot be reversed — but it can be prevented through awareness, proper protection, and safe workplace practices.
Creating a strong hearing conservation culture helps protect workers’ health, improve communication on site, and ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements (Department of Employment and Labour, 2021). Protecting hearing today helps workers maintain their quality of life both at work and at home.
COMMON RISKS
[1] Noise Exposure
Continuous exposure to high noise levels can damage inner ear cells permanently. Even short exposure to extremely loud noise can cause hearing damage.
[2] Long-Term Impact
Hearing loss often develops gradually. Early signs may include difficulty hearing conversations, ringing in the ears, or struggling to hear high-pitched sounds.
[3] Hazardous Noise Levels
Workers exposed to noise levels above safe limits are at greater risk of permanent hearing damage.
- 85 dB: 8-hour exposure limit
- 100 dB: Approx. 15 minutes exposure
- 120 dB: Immediate danger zone (HSE, 2022)
[4] Poor Hearing Protection
Damaged, incorrect, or poorly fitted hearing protection reduces effectiveness and increases exposure risk.
SAFETY TIPS
[1] Use the Correct PPE
Wear the appropriate hearing protection for the task, including earplugs or earmuffs with the correct Noise Reduction Rating (NRR).
[2] Inspect PPE Regularly
Check hearing protection equipment daily for wear, damage, or contamination, and replace defective items immediately.
[3] Reduce Noise at the Source
Move noisy machinery further away, use barriers or screens where possible, and maintain equipment regularly to reduce unnecessary noise.
[4] Limit Exposure Time
Reduce the amount of time spent in high-noise areas whenever possible and rotate tasks where appropriate.
[5] Report Hazards Early
Report unsafe noise levels, damaged PPE, or noisy machinery immediately so corrective action can be taken.
[6] Employers Have Responsibilities
Employers must provide training, conduct noise assessments, maintain SHE compliance, and ensure workers have proper hearing protection available and correctly fitted.
